President's Message

Well this week has really taken the cake for me when it comes to Rotary involvement and there's plenty more to come.

Last Thursday we had our Board Meeting followed by our AGM.

The most significant thing that we decided at the Board meeting was dipping our toe back into physical meetings. We resolved that we will meet up at the Mercure Hotel on Thursday 17th December 2020 for our end of year Christmas Function. Our Assistant Governor, Kate Strain has said she will join us as well. Hopefully, all members will take this chance to get together for the day. We are just making it A La Carte so you just pay for whatever you order.

We will then take a well-earned break and come back on Thursday 21st January 2020

For the timing, we can go back to our normal timing of 6.30 for 6.45 pm start for both these events. Note, these are both social events and no meeting will take place. However, on the one back in January, we will need to discuss an Australia Day Project that we have committed to being part of at Southbank. Our Cluster has been successful in gaining an $18,000.00 grant from the Australia Day Council to create events to bring the community together. So far there will either only be 3 or 4 clubs as part of this event which equates to an average of at least $4,500.00/club to pull off the project.

At the AGM we passed the financials and had the "elections". Next year's team so far is as follows:

President:           Sainab Sheikh & Diversity Representative

Andrew:             Vice President and Secretary

Manjula:             Treasurer

Ted:                     International and Foundation

Neville:               Imm Past Pres., Protection Officer, On to Conference & Membership

Judy:                   Club Service, Guest Speakers

Ida:                      Community Service & Environmental Representative

James:               Vocational Service (Phonse Tobin Awards)

Susan:                Youth

Larry:                   BBQ's

Cheryl:                BBQ Permits and Assistance

On the weekend spoke to the Canterbury RC and have organized for delivery of another pallet of Forameal for Sainab to distribute in the Flemington, Kensington area.

Tuesday was the big Christmas Cluster Meeting with District Governor and with the Melbourne Club with over 300 members as part of our cluster they were determined it would be high quality and run smoothly. We even had a rehearsal on Monday. Well, the host was Marion from Melbourne RC, with Kate as AG to take the main roles. Well, Murphy's Law kicked in. On Sunday Marion was crook and went to the hospital and had her appendix removed. She wasn't her best but still fronted up for the rehearsal and still looked good. Kate felt crook right on the Monday and had to go for an ECG so could not attend the rehearsal. I was fine but Judy and I spent 4hours in the northern Hospital on Sunday after our 10 yo Granddaughter while off-road on a trail bike went too fast around a bend and went right over a cliff and broke an arm and an ankle.

Anyway, I put a report together for our club and it seemed to go ok on Tuesday. Kate made it back for the Tuesday as well. the event ended with your truly doing a Santa spotted in full costume. Clearly when it comes to choosing a Santa being fat overcomes being Jewish and I keep getting the job.

Straight after that meeting I logged straight onto the Melton RC Zoom meeting and did a presentation on MUNA. It worked out well and I expect that they might enter a team in next year's event.

So with the big MUNA Assembly happening this week, you would expect it would be keeping me very busy now and it definitely has. I am pleased I have Stephen Sennett from the E Club to help with the technology. he has worked out a really good setup for the Facebook Livestream.

When you log on to watch the event you will see the screen looking like this. You will see the speaker, the resolution being debated, all the competing teams, and the 4 country blocs they are split into. As well because there are teams from 3 countries the time on the screen will toggle between the 3 time zones.

This is the promo sheet we have been using. Please note the link for viewing on the weekend.

Tonight, prior to writing this I had a run-through with the students that were interested to get familiarized with how the event works.

But before the weekend we have our meeting tomorrow night and I really urge you all to attend as we have

Jemima Montag joining us to take part in a Q & A while she is at the AIS in Canberra whilst in training for next year's Olympics. Jemima won the Gold Medal in the 20km walk at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and is already selected for next year's Olympics in Tokyo.

She is an impressive person as well as an exceptional athlete Edit Button and I really encourage you to attend
