Big Weekend No. 1 coming up

This week is the last one to book for this concert as it is this Saturday 7th May 2022. There was a time when there was a concern that we might end up with the Melbourne Town Hall venue looking pretty empty as it is such a big facility. Not anymore. Two weeks ago I reported we had about 150 bookings and last week that we were close to 250, well as I write this we are getting close to 550, and the way it is going when you allow for the last few days of sales, the 50 Ukrainian refugees that are coming as our guests and walk-ups on the day we could easily get up near 700.

The details are as follows:

Date:     Saturday 7th May 2022 at 3.00 pm

Venue: Melbourne Town Hall

Cost:     $25.00/person,  $10.00/child 12 and under.

If you can't make it you can still log on and make a donation. Or you can go and donate as well. we have already had some very generous donations so I am sure when the 4.38 pm announcement of the total amount raised is made a lot of people are going to be very surprised at how much the amount will be.

The concert will feature singers, choirs, dancers, and Keynote Speakers.

Also, if you still aren't sure you can make it be assured even if you just show up at the venue you will be able to get in by paying with cash or credit card.

Major Sponsor - Downer who is making it possible to hold the event at the iconic Melbourne Town Hall

Naturally, it is on Mother's Day, 8th May 2022 at Alexandra Gardens - Melbourne.

We still need more volunteers. So far we have commitments from Larry, Susan, Ted, Andrew, Manjula, Neville, Judy, James and there are a few others that I think will come but are not sure. We need about 5 more to get the job done properly. So please contact Neville Page at to advise if you can help.

If you are wondering if you will still be able to celebrate Mother's Day, well you can but not till the afternoon or evening.

We will have enough people to arrive at 7.00 am to do the setup but we really would like some more that can do a couple of hours between 8.00 am and 12.00 noon.

Just to be clear this BBQ is a fund-raiser but not for our club. This whole event is to raise money for Breast Cancer research and so we will be working for a very good cause.

The location of the event is at Alexandra Gardens. If you don't know where that is it is basically on the corner of St.Kilda Rd and the Yarra River another side of the Yarra River opposite Federation Square. There won't be much parking around so public transport will be a good idea.

MUNA -  Model United Nations Assembly

Things are moving in this area as well with a sub-committee meeting being held tomorrow night to help with the organizing. The Assembly is targeted at year 11 students from secondary schools and is to be held at the Mercure Hotel for the weekend of Saturday and Sunday 18th & 19th June 2022.

Thanks to Ted who worked last Saturday 30th April. But a special thanks to Susan Robb who has been there nearly every day as she is filling in for Susie Cole who seems to be having a great time in Italy.

Please let me know if you are able to do any 12.30 pm to 3.30 pm shifts this month and we can try and slot you in somewhere. Contact Neville Page  -

Big Weekend No. 2 coming up in 2 weeks

We now have the date and it is on Saturday 21st May 2022 and it will be at the North Melbourne Primary School. We have made contact with the school principal, Sarah Nightingale and she has confirmed her agreement for us to run this BBQ, naturally on the basis of sharing the profits with the school

This is on the day after the election BBQ on Sunday 22nd May 2022. So apart from all the work, we'll have to do at the BBQ there will be plenty to talk about after the votes are in.

Please contact me if you are available for any of these other BBQs on

For the weekend in between

If you are concerned that in the week between the 2 "Big" weekends you aren't going to have anything to do that is Rotary related well you could always go and represent our club at the Joseph's Corner High Tea. It is always good to catch up with Sr. Jean Dwyer. Our club has already donated to them this year and plan to do so again shortly.

Update on Somalia Hospital Project

Our members will know that our President recently returned from another trip to Somalia to try and get this project further developed and to get more information to bring back to members and other Rotary Clubs.

She will be speaking to us at our next meeting but in the meantime here are a few photos.
